The Historic Village of Cumberland
Cumberland was founded in 1802 when the first residents settled along the river at the spot that is now known as Cumberland Village. With two local wharves, several mills, match factories, and stores, the village thrived for several decades, especially after the Canadian Northern Railway established an Ottawa−Hawkesbury line that stopped at Cumberland’s train station.
In 1999, almost 200 years after it was first incorporated, Cumberland officially became a city. Although Cumberland City was then amalgamated with the City of Ottawa just two short years later in 2001. The community still retains some of its historic roots with the Cumberland Heritage Village Museum and many historic buildings such as the Post Office, Town Hall, Cumberland Belle (former Anglican church), and Ze Kitchen Gastropub (former “Dr’s House”).
