If you’re looking for fun ideas to keep the whole family entertained on February 20th, you’re not alone. Make the most of your long weekend with some of these great family-friendly activities for Family Day in Ottawa.

 

Family Movie Day

If the weather outside is frightful, and you looking to get out of the cold, why not take in a show? Take family movie night to the next level by moving it out of the house and into the theater! Save money by choosing an afternoon matinee and you’ll still have plenty of time for dinner afterwards. A couple of family-friendly flicks coming out this February include: 

  • The Amazing Maurice – The story of a streetwise cat, who has the perfect money-making scheme.
  • Mummies – Follow the adventures of the three Egyptian mummies who embark on a wacky and hilarious journey that finds them in present-day London.
  • Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania – The next installment in the Marvel superhero saga involves Ant Man and his family travelling to another realm.

 

Winterlude in Ottawa

Every February, Ottawa embraces all that winter has to offer with its annual outdoor winter festival. This year, the festival wraps up on Family Day weekend, meaning it’s the perfect time to get out and catch all the events before they close. There’s a Kids Zone featuring mini-igloos, slides, snow structures and a game park and everything is free. From skating on the Rideau Canal to the judging of the snow sculpture competition Winterlude is the place to be this Family Day weekend.

 

An Outdoor Skating Adventure

If you prefer to skate amongst the trees instead of crowds, forego the Canal and head out to one of Ottawa’s beautiful outdoor skating trails. With several kilometres of frozen trails that meander through the woods, the whole family will enjoy the day. 

Icelynd offers over 2 kilometres of exquisite trails of natural ice surface that wind through almost 100 acres of beautiful natural woods in Stittsville.

The Éco-Odyssée Nature Park in Wakefield has up to 5 km of trails laid out for a magical forest skating experience through their famous maze. The icy trails cross marshes, forests and fields and there are also several snowshoe trails.

RiverOak Skating Trail in Russell boasts over 3km of skating trails that cover 50 acres including hills, twists and turns. There are also open rinks where guests can skate around and play games. New this year is a skate park for the more advanced and extreme skaters!

Discover the enchanting site of Skating in the Forest, near Gatineau Park. You can enjoy 3 kms of frozen forest trails, sheltered from the wind. With a dusting of fresh snow, it’s magical.

 

Catch a Hockey Game on Family Day Weekend

There’s never a bad time to introduce the kids to the excitement of a live sporting event. The Ottawa Senators face off against the St. Louis Blues this Family Day weekend at Canadian Tire Place. Or check out the action at TD Place when the Ottawa 67’s take on the North Bay Battalion on Family Day at 2pm.

Get out of the house, and out of the weather at one of Ottawa’s many family-friendly museums. It’s hard to beat a day of interactive learning that’s disguised as fun!  Some of our favourites include: 

 

Hit the Slopes on Family Day

Ottawa is a great place for the winter sports enthusiast! Along with the excellent skating, hockey and outdoor festivals, Ottawa also has some great skiing nearby. For the downhill enthusiasts, Calabogie Peaks, Camp Fortune, Edelweiss, Mont Tremblant, Mont Cascades, Mont Ste. Marie, Mount Pakenham, and Vorlage ski hills are all less than 2 hours away. If you prefer cross-country skiing, Gatineau Park offers over 200 kilometers of maintained trails.
