A Great Location in Ottawa

This highly sought-after Ottawa neighbourhood sits in a prime location tucked between the Rideau Canal and the Rideau River. Nicholas Street marks the northern border and Avenue Road divides the neighbourhood from Ottawa South. 

The Flora Footbridge connects Old Ottawa East to the Glebe, providing easy access to Lansdowne Park and all it has to offer. The neighbourhood is just minutes away from the Ottawa General Hospital and only a 15-minute drive to the Ottawa airport. And it’s a quick bike or bus ride to downtown, making for an easy daily commute. 

 

An Ottawa Neighbourhood Rich in Local History

As the name indicates, Old Ottawa East is one of Ottawa’s oldest communities. The area was originally known as the Village of Archville and was incorporated as the Village of Ottawa East in 1888. It was later amalgamated with the City of Ottawa in 1907 and still retains much of its heritage. The Old Town Hall was built 1895 and is now the Ottawa East Community Center. The historic building remains a landmark and continues to serve the community over a hundred years later! 

 

A Strong Sense of Community

Old Ottawa East has an active Community Association (OOECA) that represents the interests of the residents and businesses of neighbourhood. The association strives to maintain the history and heritage of the community while also improving the quality of life for residents. Community members can also stay connected via The Mainstreeter, Old Ottawa East’s very own community newspaper. 

The Main Street Farmers Market runs from spring through fall bringing local produce to the community. With weekly face painters, kid’s crafts, and special events, such as music and guest chefs, it’s a great place for the community to come together.

 

Schools in Old Ottawa East

There are both elementary and high schools in Old Ottawa East including Immaculata High School, St. Nicholas Adult High School, Viscount Alexander Public School and Lady Evelyn Alternative elementary school. For the younger children, there is the Riverside Montessori Pre-School and the Rainbow Kidschool. 

Saint Paul University on Main Street is a fully bilingual university with both undergraduate and graduate programs in Canon Law, Philosophy, Human Sciences, and Theology. And Carleton University is just a few minutes away in Old Ottawa South.
